Mammographic Procedures

Our highly skilled and trained breast Radiologists perform specialised hookwire and steriotactic biopsies under mammogram guidance.

Hookwire Procedure

Mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan images or pictures sometimes show abnormalities in the breast that cannot be felt by a doctor. If the abnormality is to be surgically removed, it is necessary to place a fine wire, called a hookwire, in the breast with its tip at the site of the abnormality. This acts as a marker during surgery and enables the surgeon to remove the correct area of breast tissue.

Stereotactic Biopsy

A breast biopsy is performed to remove some cells from a suspicious area in the breast and examine them under a microscope to determine a diagnosis. This can be performed surgically or, more commonly, by a radiologist using a less invasive procedure that involves a hollow needle and image-guidance. Image-guided needle biopsy is not designed to remove the entire lesion.

In stereotactic breast biopsy, our tomosynthesis/3D mammography machine uses x-rays to help guide the radiologist’s biopsy equipment to the site of the abnormal growth.
